Ear Cleaning

Ear cleaning is a minor, non invasive procedure and can often be required for pets who are prone to the build up of wax for example; frequent swimmers, allergies and those breeds with floppy ears! The idea of cleaning is to help prevent any unwanted infections by safely removing any excess wax or debris that contributes to infections from bacterial growth.

It is important to regularly check your pets ears for signs of infection and contact your vet for a check up. Signs of infection can include;

  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Abnormal smell
  • Pus or any discharge
  • Swelling

Always seek advice from your vet if you are concerned your pet may have an ear infection. Do not attempt to treat at home as this can damage the Tympanic Membrane (ear drum) and have lasting harmful effects. Your vet will need to examine the ear canal and tympanic membrane prior to prescribing any necessary treatment.

What to expect at your pets Ear Cleaning Appointment

At Liverpool Vet Nurse, we use a fear free approach to our handling techniques. This means we follow your pets lead and make them feel as comfortable as we can during their procedure. Allowing pets to adjust to a new person is a huge help for them to gain trust and confidence around them. I will simply sit with your pet to allow me to gain their trust.

I always bring a selection of treats to every appointment, upon booking I will ask if your pet is on any specific diet or has any condition such as diabetes which may be affected by treats. I will use treats to put pets at ease and allow them to trust my presence.

Once your pet is feeling comfortable and happy, I will begin to carry out the procedure. I will check your pets ear externally, and if there are any visual signs of infection as described above, I will unfortunately be unable to continue with the procedure and recommend you contact your vet for a consultation. If the ear appears normal with some wax build up I will proceed. I will wear gloves for the procedure, and I will use a ear cleaner as dispensed/recommended by your vet. This will need to be supplied by yourself. I will administer the required amount of cleaner into the ear canal, and massage the base of the ear to distribute and loosen any wax or debris. Your pet may appear itchy and want to shake their head, this is normal due to the sensation of fluid in the ear canal. Once suitably massaged, I will use cotton wool to gently wipe any excess cleaner along with loosened wax/debris from the ear. I will repeat for the other ear.

Once the procedure is all complete, I will give lots of praise and more treats.

Possible complications/Outcomes

It is unlikely any complications will occur from the procedure itself. However, if your pet becomes itchy or seems uncomfortable after the ear clean, a veterinary check will be necessary as there may be an underlying cause for wax build up that requires more than ear cleaning. By booking this appointment you understand if any issues arise, a check up from your vet will be advised.
